A cubicle installation in Boise goes smoothly when everyone knows what happens and when. Whether you’re opening a new office, growing into a bigger space or replacing old workstations, install day is the point where planning turns into a working floor. This guide walks facility managers through the process step by step, from delivery to the final punch list, so you can plan your space, your people and your schedule around it.
OFR has been installing commercial office furniture for 20 years. Our installers are factory-certified on Steelcase, MillerKnoll, Haworth, Allsteel and Spacesaver, and we install all major brands, including HON, Global and Teknion. Here’s how a typical install day comes together.
Before Install Day: Site Prep
Most install-day problems start before the crew arrives. A few weeks out, confirm these items:
- The space is ready. Paint, flooring and ceiling work should be finished. Crews can’t set workstations on wet floors or under active construction.
- Access is clear. Confirm the loading dock, freight elevator and building hours. If your building needs a certificate of insurance or a reserved elevator, ask early.
- The final layout is approved. The crew installs from the drawing, so it should show every workstation and its orientation, with markings for power and data entry points.
- Old furniture is out, or the plan for it is set. If existing cubicles need to come out first, include that in the scope so it’s scheduled, not discovered.
Receiving and Staging
Furniture rarely arrives in one perfectly timed delivery. Orders from different manufacturers can ship on different days, and some parts arrive early while others lag.
Because our Boise warehouse is local, OFR can receive and store furniture ahead of your install date and deliver it when your space is ready. That keeps cartons out of your hallways and lets the crew check that the order is complete before it reaches your building.
On install day, product is brought in and staged by area, so each zone of the floor has its panels, work surfaces and storage nearby. Staging well is one of the biggest factors in how fast the rest of the day goes.
What the Crew Does on Install Day
Once product is staged, the crew works through the layout in a set order:
- Lay out and check the floor plan. The lead installer confirms the drawing against the actual space, including columns, outlets and doorways, before anything is built.
- Build the panel runs. Panels, frames or spines go up first. They set the footprint for every workstation.
- Install work surfaces and components. Desktops, overhead storage, shelves, keyboard trays and accessories are attached to the panels.
- Set freestanding pieces. Pedestals, filing, tables and seating are placed where the layout calls for them. (Adding shelving, lockers or racking too? See storage systems installation.)
- Level and adjust. Stations are leveled, doors and drawers are checked, and everything is set to the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Clean up. Packaging is removed and the floor is left ready to use.
Larger projects can take more than one day, and crews may work in phases so part of the office stays in use.
Coordinating Power and Data
Powered panels and workstation electrical are a common source of delays, so coordinate them early.
- Know who does what. The furniture crew installs the workstations. Hard-wiring to the building’s electrical is usually done by a licensed electrician, and network cabling by your IT or cabling vendor. Confirm this in writing for your project.
- Schedule the trades in sequence. Electricians and cabling contractors typically come in after panels are up and before or alongside final component installation. Your installer and your trades should agree on timing.
- Check the drawing. Make sure power and data feed locations on the layout match the building, whether they come from the floor, wall or ceiling.
The Punch List and Walkthrough
At the end of the install, the lead installer walks the space with your point of contact. Together you check:
- Every workstation matches the layout
- Drawers, doors and locks work, and keys are accounted for
- Surfaces are level and nothing is damaged
- Any missing or back-ordered parts are noted
Items that can’t be finished that day, often a part that hasn’t shipped yet, go on a punch list with a plan to complete them. A clear punch list is how you know the job is done right, not just done. Every job is backed by the OFR Guarantee.
What You Should Have Ready
You can save time on install day by having these ready:
- One decision-maker on site who can answer layout questions
- The approved drawing and any furniture order or bill of materials
- Building access, parking and dock details
- A schedule for your electrician and IT vendor
- A plan for moving employees’ belongings into the new stations
What Affects Cost and Timeline
Every project is different, so cost and schedule depend on the job. The main factors are:
- Size and complexity. The number of workstations, panel heights and powered components all add labor.
- Site access. Stairs, long carries, small elevators and limited dock time slow the work.
- Timing of deliveries. Staggered or late shipments can stretch the schedule. Local warehousing helps.
- After-hours work. Installing evenings or weekends to keep your office running affects scheduling.
- Removal of existing furniture. Taking out old cubicles adds time to the project.
